Local knowledge

What we see in Brighton homes

Dense Victorian and Regency terraces, extensive flat conversion throughout, and post-war development on the outskirts at Patcham and Withdean. Conversion flats dominate large parts of the city and they bring shared supplies, communal stopcocks and pipework running through neighbouring property.

Brighton has an exceptionally high proportion of converted flats, and in a conversion the isolation point is frequently not inside your own property at all. That single fact decides how bad a leak gets, because the time spent finding the stopcock is the time water keeps running. Anyone in a Brighton conversion should locate and photograph their isolation valve before they ever need it.

Questions

Plumbing in Brighton, answered

What work do you take on in Brighton and Hove?

Boiler installations and larger projects: new boilers, bathroom installations, powerflushes and major boiler repairs. Brighton is around 45 minutes south of our Crawley base, so we travel for installations and major work rather than short routine visits. If what you need is a quick repair or an annual service, a local engineer will serve you better, and we will tell you so honestly.

Which parts of Brighton and Hove do you work in?

We take on installations and major work across BN1, BN2 and BN3, including Hove, Preston Park, Kemptown, Seven Dials, Hanover, Patcham, Withdean, Rottingdean and Saltdean, and Portslade to the west. We have customers in the city going back years, in everything from Regency and Victorian terraces to the post-war homes on the outskirts.

Can you install a new boiler in a Brighton conversion flat?

Yes. Much of the city's housing has been split into flats, and a conversion often means a supply shared with neighbours, a stopcock in a communal area and pipes that pass through someone else's flat. We survey in person so the flue route, pipework and isolation points are understood before fitting day, and you get one fixed price for the job. Find and photograph your own isolation valve now, because in a conversion it is often outside your flat.

Is Brighton's hard water a problem for a new boiler?

It can be. Brighton and Hove's water is very hard because of the chalk Downs around the city, and limescale builds up fast in boilers and fittings, especially in older Victorian terraces. When we install a boiler we clean the system, fit a magnetic filter and add inhibitor, and we recommend a scale reducer. Keep up the annual service afterwards, which a local engineer is well placed to do.

Can you come out for a plumbing emergency in Brighton?

Honestly, a local engineer will usually reach you sooner. We are around 45 minutes away and concentrate on installations and major work in Brighton, not emergency call-outs. Isolate the water at your stopcock or valve first, which may be in a communal area if you live in a conversion. If the failure turns out to need a new boiler, that is work we can quote and plan with you.
