Cookie Policy
Last updated 25 September 2026
This page explains what cookies and similar technologies this website uses. We have kept this deliberately short, because we use very few.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Some are needed for a site to work, and others are used to measure how a site is used or to serve advertising.
What this site uses
Strictly necessary
These are required for the site to function and cannot be switched off. They do not store anything that identifies you personally. This includes basic security and load balancing set by our hosting provider.
We ask first
Analytics and advertising cookies are only set if you choose Accept on the banner at the bottom of the page. If you choose Reject, or make no choice, they are not set. Your choice is remembered in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie, and you can change it at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
Until you accept, the Google tag may still send Google a basic signal that a page was viewed or an enquiry was made. That signal carries no cookies and no identifier, and Google uses it only to estimate, in aggregate, how many enquiries our advertising produces.
Analytics (only if you accept)
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages people find useful, which helps us write better guides and fix what is not working. It sets the cookies _ga and _ga_<ID>, which last up to two years. The data is aggregated and is not used to identify individuals.
Advertising (only if you accept)
If you arrive from one of our Google adverts, Google Ads measures whether that advert led to an enquiry or a phone call. It sets _gcl_au on this site, which lasts 90 days, and Google may set its own cookies on its domains. For visitors who arrive from an advert, the phone number shown may be replaced by a Google forwarding number so a call from the advert can be counted; the call still comes straight to us. You can control Google's advertising through its own ad settings.
Embedded content
Some of our guides include YouTube videos. We use the privacy-enhanced YouTube domain and, importantly, the video only loads when you click play. Until you do, YouTube sets nothing on your device. Once you play a video, YouTube's own privacy policy applies.
Our contact page offers a Google map. It only loads if you press Show the map, and Google may set its own cookies once it does.
Controlling cookies
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Every major browser lets you do this, usually under Privacy or Security. Blocking all cookies may stop parts of some websites working, though this site will continue to function.
Useful guides: Chrome, Safari, Firefox.
